You should be an intermediate skier/rider with some off-piste experience, and/or more rugged ski resort terrain. Introductory level options are certainly welcome, however the group’s overall ability will dictate the day.

Thanks to last season Morino lodge staff member Seth Hampson for an excellent Season edit. Alas, Seth has joined the corporate ladder so he can’t make it back again for more of the same this season. 90% filmed in Hakuba with the rest from early and late season Washington state.

Something was in the air yesterday and boards were duly waxed and season passes picked up and ready in case the snow gods provided – Which they did! A glorious crisp bluebird morning followed by an announcement that Happo and Goryu were both opening to the tune of about 60cm on the upper slopes. Happo staff greeted the small band of merry makers, bowed and thanked us for making it to the first day of the season. In exchange, Cheers and gratitude for working to open on such short notice. The upper slopes were covered with nice knee deep dense chalky powder and with lots of space and not many people the fresh turns lasted till lunchtime.

Ok, it ain`t exactly winter yet, but its getting very close. & besides, if it wasn`t for skiing & snowboarding, Autumn would be my favorite season in Hakuba. Crisp air, technicolor mountains, great food & lots of beautiful hikes like this one we did a couple days ago. Oh & heavily discounted accommodation @ the Morino Chalets.    

There`s no doubt that Myoko Kogen is being discovered by powder enthusiasts & by those wanting a heavy dose of small town Japan.
